The largest national food drive of the year was held on May 12, and we are proud to report that 128,544 pounds of food was collected by our community! The LCFB is thankful for the generous support of our community members who donated food. Azalea Moving & Storage and Charleston Moving & Storage in partnership with Move for Hunger helped to pick up food, and our local postal carriers worked tirelessly to collect donations from thousands of mailboxes across the Lowcountry.
If you were out of town for the Stamp Out Hunger food drive, you can make a food donation by participating in our Virtual Food Drive! Together, we can Stamp Out Hunger!

To help feed the hungry in all South Carolina communities, the South Carolina Food Bank Association is proud to announce the Border to Border Hunger Challenge sponsored by Wells Fargo. The Border to Border Hunger Challenge is a statewide donation matching campaign running from May 14 to June 15 that will provide $150,000 to help South Carolina’s four food banks, Golden Harvest Food Bank, Harvest Hope Food Bank, Lowcountry Food Bank and Second Harvest Food Bank of Metrolina, provide for hungry people. Wells Fargo will match donations made to these food banks one-to-one once $150,000 is collectively raised. Any donation made from May 14 to June 15 will be eligible for the match.
The challenge was announced with a press event at the Harvest Hope Food Bank in Columbia on May 21. The announcement detailed the partnership with Wells Fargo and featured the Wells Fargo state coach.

Crossroads Community Support Expands in Bluffton
The LCFB is proud to welcome five fresh faces to the Zucker Family Production Kitchen. The 5th class of Food Works apprentices, who began training on Monday, May 14, have hit the ground running and are enthusiastic about learning the in’s and out’s of the kitchen while preparing nutritious meals for food-insecure children and seniors. They will spend a total of 14 weeks under the direction of Food Works Executive Chef Kimberly Ortego Kuver, and graduate with the tools necessary to find employment in the culinary field.
Welcome, students!
Meet the 5th Class of Food Works Apprentices
Ken and Sue Kroupa of Crossroads Community Support Services, along with Ava-Martine Young of the Lowcountry Food Bank, at the Bluffton Farmer’s Market.
The LCFB is proud to be working with Crossroads Community Support Services, a BackPack Buddies community partner located in Bluffton, SC, that is working hard to alleviate childhood hunger in Beaufort County.
Founded in 2009 by husband and wife duo Ken and Sue Kroupa, Crossroads Community Support Services operates BackPack Buddies programs in two Bluffton schools, which provides 80 students with backpacks full of nutritious snacks to take home each weekend. The food, provided by the LCFB, fills in the gaps between meals these students receive at home. In the 2012-2013 school year, Crossroads Community Support Services will expand the BackPack Buddies program from two to three elementary schools and will also establish school-based pantry programs at Okatie Elementary School and Bluffton Middle School.
Ken and Sue are also working to ensure that children served by the BackPack Buddies program and their families have access to fresh produce over the summer months. Thanks to a partnership with the Bluffton Farmer’s Market, families have been supplied with vouchers that can be redeemed for $10 worth of fresh local produce each week beginning in June. Crossroads will reimburse the growers based upon the number of used vouchers they submit for redemption. Thank you, Crossroads, for being a dedicated community partner, thinking out of the box, and using local partnerships to alleviate hunger at the local level!
