As of December 31, the LCFB will have distributed 18 million pounds of food, 90,000 Kids Cafe and senior meals from the Zucker Family Production Kitchen, and 85,500 BackPack Buddies backpacks – the most we have distributed in our 28 year history. While this is telling of the ever-increasing demand for food assistance in our service area, it is also very telling of the amazing community response to the hunger crisis at hand.

You may have made a financial contribution, volunteered your time, hosted a food drive, or browsed our website to learn how to fight hunger in your community. No matter what you have done -- how big or how small -- please know that your support is what has enabled us to serve over 200,000 individuals in the Lowcountry this year.

On behalf of the Lowcountry Food Bank’s governing board, staff, and patrons, thank you for your over-whelming support. We wish you a safe and happy holiday season, and hope that you will continue with us in the fight against hunger in 2012!

Happy Holidays from the LCFB!

Bank of America volunteers prepare emergency food boxes for distribution.

On December 15, the Lowcountry Food Bank was paid a very special visit by a group of 45 Bank of America employees! The group of managers, representing branches along the South Carolina coast, spent the morning packing emergency food boxes for a mass distribution. By lunchtime, the eager group packed 2,500 boxes for the hungry! As part of their ongoing effort to address critical economic and social issues in the communities they serve, Bank of America has also committed to contributing an additional $2 for every $1 donated to Feeding America or local food banks through their Gift for Opportunity Fund. To extend the impact of your individual donation through Bank of America’s Gift for Opportunity Fund, please visit www.feedingamerica.org/BankofAmerica or www.bankofamerica.com/give and make a donation.

Upcoming Events & Promotions

January 31 — Empty Bowls, Empty Plates: Students at the Addlestone Hebrew Academy will be participating in a mitzvoth project that teaches them the skills and techniques of the art of collage, and also about childhood hunger in the Lowcountry. With materials donated by Publix and Artist and Craftsman, students will create their own assemblages that represent the many empty bowls in our community as part of an ongoing service learning project about hunger. All of the collaged bowls and plates will be auctioned off on Tuesday, January 31 at 7pm at Addlestone Hebrew Academy, and will benefit the LCFB’s BackPack Buddies program. A selected number of bowls and plates will be put on display at the food bank. The auction is open to the public. For more information, call Deb Loesel at 843-747-8146 ext. 110.

Garrett Academy students (left) standing proudly by the Fire House they built to auction off for the Lowcountry Food Bank.

Students in the Construction Arts program at Garrett Academy took part in a hands-on project that not only taught them a thing or two about building houses, but also about the gift of giving back! Using $6,000 worth of raw materials donated by local builders, they constructed four 50-square foot playhouses: A Fire House, a Sheriff House, a Wacky House, and a Beach House. The playhouses, which were decorated with holiday lights by the City of North Charleston, were on display at the Felix C. Davis Community Center in Park Circle and auctioned off to benefit local charities including the Lowcountry Food Bank. The students, who dedicated hours upon hours to the project (with some even working over Thanksgiving break), gained experience in masonry, metal fabrication, and carpentry – which covers 90% of the state competency that is typically covered in a two year period. Through the project, they were exposed to all aspects of the building process, and also able to give back to their community!
