September 9th is going to be a very exciting day! Why you ask? Because the LCFB and Harvest Hope Food Bank have partnered with Chick-fil-A for the first ever “Fill-a-Truck” food drive to help feed families in Myrtle Beach and Florence. During the all-day event (6am-7pm), when you bring three non-perishable food items to any Chick-fil-A in Horry County, you receive a coupon for a FREE Chick-fil-A sandwich.  Our friends at East Coast Honda–Volkswagen will be hauling all donated food to the Grand Strand Regional Food Center to be distributed to the hungry.  For more information on how you can volunteer at the event, please contact LCFB Communications and Special Events Manager, Hollis Tuma at 843.747.8146, ext. 105.

Thank you to our partners:

Please join us on September 23, alongside the company of friends, neighbors, and fellow supporters of sustainable agriculture as we raise money for our Growing Food Locally program. We invite you to reconnect with the source of your food, and to honor the talented farmers, food artisans, and chefs that contribute to the growing culinary reputation and local food community of Beaufort. The Farmer's Table supper features a local meal prepared by six acclaimed lowcountry chefs, farmer-produced wines, handcrafted brews, and live music by Blue Mudd. Tickets, sponsorships, and more information can be found here or by calling LCFB Communications and Special Events Manager, Hollis Tuma at 843.747.8146, ext. 105.

We look forward to seeing you at The Farmer’s Table!

The Farmer’s Table — September 23!

The 3rd annual Student Food Drive is just around the corner! Set to kick-off on September 27, the Student Food Drive’s mission is to unite and empower area high school students in the commitment to feed the hungry and promote volunteerism.  This friendly six week competition showcases student leadership and commitment to community. Participating tricounty schools and students are encouraged to engage area businesses, organizations and feeder schools in their efforts to raise the most food and fight hunger. The high schools also compete against each other in a series of challenges including a “Rep Yo School” skit competition, creative event competition, and social media competition.  For more information about how your school can get involved, how you can help raise food for your area high school, and for all sponsorship information,  please contact LCFB Food Solicitor Amy Kosar at 843-747-8146 ext. 108.

Check out the Student Food Drive’s Gold Can Sponsor, Young & Free South Carolina Powered by South Carolina Federal Credit Union, and their video encouraging students to get involved!!

Calling All Students

Many of the food bank’s clients, like so many in the America Street community of downtown Charleston, are victims of Food Deserts — areas in the industrialized world where healthy, affordable food is difficult to obtain. Tierra Unida, a grassroots film making organization launched by a group of recent College of Charleston graduates, has been filming The America Street Project — a documentary on the lack of access to fresh, locally produced food and the affects it has had on the America Street community. The LCFB is featured in the film and speaks to the daunting effects that food deserts have on many of the clients we have. We invite you to learn more about Tierra Unida’s project, and how food deserts play a role in food insecurity, on Kickstarter.
