The LCFB’s staff proudly welcomed Feeding America’s President and CEO, Vicki Escarra, to the Paul Hulsey Community Food and Nutrition Center on Thursday, August 12th. In town for a USDA conference, Escarra recognized that times are difficult and shared her message of unity. “We cannot do it alone. It takes innovation and the public and private sectors working together to meet the needs of more than 37 million Americans served through our network of more than 200 food banks.

During the tour many of the LCFB’s programs and services were highlighted, including Backpack Buddies, the volunteer-designed vacuum chamber, the Zucker Family Production Kitchen, and the community garden. “As a member of Feeding America, it is truly an honor to have Ms. Escarra visit with us today,” shared Lowcountry Food Bank Executive Director, D. Jermaine Husser. Escarra’s visit comes just before September’s “Hunger Action Month,” in which the LCFB will join food banks from around the country in a nationwide effort to build hunger awareness.

September is just around the corner, and that means that Student Food Drive 2010 is almost here! As one of September’s Hunger Action Month initiatives, high schools in Charleston, Dorchester, and Berkeley counties will compete against each other to see who can collect the most food for the LCFB. Beginning on September 21, students will plan events to promote the Student Food Drive, organize the food collection, package and deliver the food to the LCFB.
